Snow queen will reign over Knott's

A snow queen will menace Knott’s Berry Farm guests this Halloween in the new maze Dead of Winter.

Knott’s Scary Farm’s 43rd edition will also feature returning favorites, including Elvira and last year’s hit maze, Special Ops: Infected. In addition, the park will expand its kid-friendly Halloween offerings during the day with the new Knott’s Spooky Farm.

In Dead of Winter, the Snow Queen and her henchmen of resurrected Viking warriors will go after those who wend their way through her realm, which maze designer Gus Krueger described as history and fantasy.

“To me, the best mazes are a mix of a beautiful environment, good talent and good scares,” he said.

Krueger promised that Knott’s Snow Queen will be nothing like “that other snow queen,” referring to the ubiquitous Elsa from Disney’s “Frozen.” Instead, Krueger’s Snow Queen will be more like the villainous version in Hans Christian Andersen’s original story.

The new attraction will include a mirror-maze portion and at least some snow similar to the kind Knott’s uses in Ghost Town during Christmas. The maze will contrast dark portions typical of Halloween mazes with white areas.

“I wanted to contrast the white and black because everything’s so dark all the time,” Krueger said. “I’m not afraid of going white, which is terrifying for people in haunt design.”
