Cedar Fair CEO Matt Ouimet Reveals the Secret of Running a Successful Amusement Park

"That's one of the main reasons Cedar Fair has different names on all of our parks. We don't try and put them under one big brand. They're all unique in their own special ways," Ouimet stated. "Take -- for example -- Knott's Berry Farm which is right in the middle of one of the most competitive theme park markets in the world. Within 60 miles of Knott's, you have LEGOLAND California, you have SeaWorld San Diego, you have Universal Studios Hollywood and you have the Disneyland Resort. So in the Southern California market, it's really important to figure out who you are and then be extremely disciplined about it."

"I mean, think about it. Knott's Berry Farm can't be about the movies. And we can't be about fantasy. We have to be who we are," Matt continued. "So when it comes to Knott's, we want to be that place where having fun is still fun. Or as Raffi Kaprelyan -- the Vice President and General Manager at Knott's Berry Farm -- says 'where people can still have organically grown fun.' We want to be the theme park in this market that's uncomplicated, affordable, familiar but still has a few surprises."

"So that's our goal with Knott's Berry Farm. To occupy that space in the highly competitive Southern California marketplace, to be comfortable with that space and not try and be one of those other guys. One huge advantage we have in this market is that people still have a strong affinity for what the Knott's family created," Ouimet said. "So I hope that -- with the respectful upgrades & improvements we've made to Ghost Town, the Timber Mountain Log Ride, the Calico Mine Train and Camp Snoopy over the past three years -- we wind up being known as the community park, not the corporate park. And to some degree, I think being a little smaller has probably worked to our advantage with Knott's."

It's worth noting here that all of the changes that Matt & his team have made since he came on board at the Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. in June of 2011 have had a significant impact on Knott's Berry Farm's bottom line. Just last year, this Buena Park institution had the most successful year (from both an attendance standpoint as well as a profitability point-of-view) ever. And given that Knott's is the second most profitable park in the Cedar Fair system, that's a really nice feather in Ouimet's cap.

"And the good news is we're not done with Knott's. We've got a five year plan in place for this theme park. And I'm hoping that -- with Cedar Fair's help -- I'll then have the privilege of turning that into a ten year plan," Matt enthused. "It's not exactly a closely guarded secret that -- when it comes to Knott's -- we're trying to figure out what to do with the area where Kingdom of the Dinosaurs & Knott's Bear-y Tales used to be located. Assuming that the Wonder Mountain's Guardian ride works out, there will probably be some lessons that we learned up in Canada that we can apply down here in Buena Park."

Knott's News: Great read by Jim Hill. Unfortunately, a couple of things were said that give me pause, one being annoying while the other is worrisome.

Such as Matt talking about each park's unique identity and that being one of the main reasons they have different names. He goes on to say he doesn't want to put them all under the same brand. That sounds good but please explain to me why the majority of the parks share the same generic Cedar Fair font (you know, where the "i" is dotted with a flag) for their park logo with the same Cedar Fair corporate logo above it? Matt's been running the show long enough that all the parks should have unique logos by now. I won't even get started on everything else the parks share that rob them of their identities.

Most worrisome is his mention of lessons learned on Guardian being applied to Knott's upcoming dark ride. This can be interpreted as them seriously considering building a TrioTech attraction there. Unfortunately this lines up with the rumors I've heard; that they're still taking bids from ride manufacturers and that it's not set in stone what's going in there. If true, please for the love of god don't put TrioTech there. What a slap in the face to the previous occupants that would be.

Hidden Knott’s - A ‘Berry’ Interesting History Tour

Recently, we shared some hidden Disneyland history in honor of the park's 59th birthday. But here in Orange County it's worth remembering that there's another historic theme park that goes back even further, with roots both figurative and literal: Knott’s Berry Farm.

[...]

Recently we took a walk around the park with Knott’s Berry Farm historian Eric Lynxwiler (co-author of the book, “Knott’s Preserved: From Boysenberry to Theme Park, the History of Knott’s Berry Farm”). He revealed many hidden pieces of history; charming remnants that remind the visitor that long before Disneyland, Walter Knott was all but birthing the theme park concept, lugging in piece after historic piece, one chunk of Americana at a time.

The Season Pass Podcast #275- Knott's Calico Mine Ride RENEWED!

This week The Season Pass Podcast is at Knott’s Berry Farm once again...yup...The OFFICIAL Home Park of TSPP! Here’s the audio recorded on June 12th, 2014, for the re-opening of the newly refurbished Calico Mine Ride and Camp Snoopy! Doug Barnes, Robert Coker, Jeff Tucker (Knott’s Entertainment Supervisor), and Tom Zeliff (NoLimits and ThrillNetwork.com) share interviews with Raffi Kaprelyan (Knott’s General Manager), John Chiu (Knott’s Director of Food and Beverage), the show team behind Snoopy Unleashed ice skating spectacular, Eric Lynxwiler (Knott’s Graphic Designer/Co-Author of Knott’s Preserved), and many more, plus tons and tons and tons of Calico Mine Ride talk. Enjoy!

Listen to the show at TheSeasonPassPodcast

Knott's News: One of the most reassuring things in the show (besides everything) is what Raffi Kaprelyan said:

"We've already got plans for the other stuff and hopefully if everything goes as it should go,  you know, hitting higher attendance, then....plans will set to form a play, as they've been planned out."

"The thing that works, you want to enhance it, you want to make it better, as it gets old. The things that don't work you want to take it out and replace it with something, just like we did with Perilous Plunge. There are other opportunities in the park along those lines. It's just a matter finding the right timing, finding the right product. So that we don't loose the continuity of what we've been doing."

What this says to me is that Knott's recognizes that they've raised the standards for the park, along with guest expectations, and that they're not afraid to be ambitious going forward (of which will only be halted should they not meet their numbers). This also shows that they're looking at taking down other attractions in the future to further enhance the park (I'm looking at a couple of coasters and a certain swing that I'd love to see go) .

Ride and Slide into Knotts Berry Farm

Today we take a stroll through Knott’s Berry Farm for a quick update. Visitors are clearly enjoying the affordable admission, fun rides, amazing food and entertainment at the park. Speaking of great deals, Knott’s has unveiled a new ticket option that will get you into both parks on the same day – Ride and slide! Next up we chime in on the video monitors which are appearing in the queue at the park. Good thing or bad thing? We note some wonderful things happening in Fiesta Village too and recommend you go see the new band playing there. We close things out with a few things on our Knott’s wish list and a tour through Ghost Town during the magic hour. Time to hit the farm.

A look inside the old Kingdom of the Dinosaurs building! Recent picture!!!

"Took this Friday night at the now closed Kingdom Of The Dinosaurs. It's two big empty rooms."

Knott's News: This was taken by a man on Facebook (contact me if it's ok to share your name) who is presumably working on the mystery 2015 project. To lend credibility, he also posted picks of himself working on Calico Mine Ride during it's refurbishment. Very, very cool. Hope he doesn't get in trouble for this, it's an awesome way to build hype.

That said, this confirms that Knott's won't be reusing any of the existing ride elements and will be starting entirely from scratch. As long as they don't waste all this space by filling it with a bunch of projector screens, I'll be happy.

1983 Knott's Berry Farm Camp Snoopy Commercial

What if Garner Holt re-imagined Kingdom of the Dinosaurs? Lets take a look

Sequoia Creative Triceratops animatronic

I'm rooting for a new Knott's Bear-y Tales in 2015 but that doesn't stop one from wondering what magic Garner Holt could work on Kingdom of the Dinosaurs.

Garner Holt 2010 IAAPA display

What you see above is from a cancelled Garner Holt project called Dinosaur Canyon that was supposed to be added to the Howe Caverns in New York some time ago. This Lester Howe animatronic has an impressive range of movements and could easily become a much more Wells inspired professor without the lab coat.

This Animatronic Life: Finding Gold in the Calico Mine Ride Part I

Howdy—and welcome to the latest This Animatronic Life, the “not-as-frequent-as-I’d-like-but-genuinely-tries-to-be-semi-regular” column about the history of animatronics technology, themed entertainment, and Garner Holt Productions, Inc.’s (GHP) place in the story! Since the last update, we’ve been enormously busy here, with all sorts of projects for new and returning clients: Mattel, Disney, Knott’s Berry Farm, Lowes Foods, and more. In fact, this year alone, we’ve already had more than a dozen openings for our work in various attractions, shopping venues, museums, and other locations all over the country, plus lots of international development work still in the beginning stages of our creative process. There’s always something new and fantastic going on here at GHP.
The most visible of these projects—and I think the most meaningful and fun this year—is the recent reopening the Calico Mine Train attraction at Knott’s Berry Farm. The historical importance of the attraction has been dissected countless times by more studious fans than I am, so I won’t give my own interpretation. The attraction has been important and inspirational to me since I first experienced it as a young child. The Mine Train and I are the same age (actually I’m a couple of months older), and I can distinctly remember my first trip through, sitting on my dad’s lap as we entered the dimly lit, winding corridors of the mountain—I thought it was a real mine! I think that’s one of Bud Hurlbut’s best accomplishments with the Mine Train: the conceit in the ride isn’t fantasy, it’s a representation of real history.

Ripping out the old moving platform for the old Kingdom of The Dinosaurs!

Knott's News: Well this makes sense, since the original ride system not holding up to modern California's safety standards was one of the deciding factors in Kingdom of the Dinosaurs closure.

Knott’s Calico Mine Ride Re-imagined!

Lightning has struck twice in Buena Park. Garner Holt Productions and Knott’s Berry Farm have successfully – and faithfully – renovated both of the mountains beyond what anyone anticipated. Like the Log Ride project before it, the Calico Mine Ride is now alive with over 50 new animated miners and over 50 new critters, from blind cave fish to a pair of vultures on the mountain’s exterior! Everywhere you look, there is something new to see and delightful scenes coming to life.

Knott's News: Alright, I know this is another old video but these are excellent interviews.

EnterTeenment News covers Calico Mine Ride Grand Re-Opening

Knott's News: I know this is old but it's a well made little video that I felt was worth sharing. Very nice camera was used.

Indeed the 2015 mystery project is well underway!

Knott's News: Hopefully if they don't plan on re-using the mural, they save it. Possibly even relocate it to a restaurant or store in the Roaring 20s area.

How about a new attraction for Fiesta Village?

Rumor has it that the Fiesta Village section of Knott's Berry Farm may be next in line for the same sort of sprucing up that Camp Snoopy received this year. This most likely won't happen next year, so we have plenty of time to start speculating. Of course, it'll get the theming touched up and and will probably look better then ever but why not add a new attraction to anchor the refurbished area? Time for some backseat Imagineering.

Watch the new fully restored Calico Mine Ride at Knott's Berry Farm transform from day to night.

Knott's News: Looks great but why is that popcorn stand still there? Let me rephrase that; why is it not themed to the area (looks like it'd be more at home in the Roaring 20s area)? How hard would it be to re-theme it to Pete “Sluice Box” McGee's Dang BLASTED Gold Popcorn (of course referencing the gold and dynamite blasting of the ride) or convert it to a beverage stand themed after one of those "miracle elixir" wagons with some clever Ghost Town tie in? It just stands out like a sore thumb with all the work they put into the surroundings. Hopefully it slips into their budget at some point.

Cedar Fair 2013 Injury Totals

Theme park CEO says job is about making memories

Matt Ouimet has spent his first two years as chief executive of Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. making sure that the chain’s 11 amusement parks across the country have plenty of attractions for all ages.

New additions include shows featuring Cirque du Soleil-type acrobats, strolling bands and family-oriented rides along with nighttime shows and fireworks that are designed to keep people in the parks longer.

“We’re thinking about people who aren’t coaster riders,” Ouimet said. “I think that’s where we differentiate ourselves.”

Knott’s Berry Farm… what’s next?

Shown above is a great video by the kids over at Coaster Force of the new for 2014 Wonder Mountain’s Guardian dark ride at Canada’s Wonderland. It was billed early on as an “interactive family dark ride”… and as you might see from the video, it is indeed interactive. But why does this matter at all in an article about what’s next for Knott’s Berry Farm? Well… Matt Ouimet pitched it in a conference call as a compelling dark ride concept that they felt could have legs in more than just one of their parks…

But… can I be the one to ask why?

See, the way I see it is a little like this. Wonder Mountain’s Guardian is, for lack of better terms… not good. It’s basically a ride through a first person shooter video game with a drop track at the end as the gimmick ending. And not to sound like an old curmudgeon but… does everything need to be guns and shooting in a day and age where we collectively lament the violence that is so pervasive in our culture? Not to mention the issue of “does everything need to be interactive”? The pitch with the ride in Canada was that it was an interactive experience with a long screen that they can change from shooting bugs to shooting zombies at Halloween time. Okay. And?

Knotts Berry Farm Grows Great Entertainment and More

I’ve just returned from the Farm and boy are they pulling out all the stops this summer. As you know, they have recently renovated another one of their major classic attractions, the Calico Mine Ride. But there is much more to see at Knotts Berry Farm . Did you know about the tons of Live entertainment that recently began performances at the beginning of the summer season? We will share some of the highlights with you today. We will also show you which shows not to miss. Speaking of entertainment, we also fill you in on what Knott’s Berry Farm will be doing for the 4th of July Holiday. It’s not all good news, however. A recent fire occurred inside the building that houses Johnny Rocket’s. Will that affect any plans for a dark ride in that space? We round things out by looking at the renovated Calico Mine Ride’s surprisingly beautiful lighting package after the sun goes down.
